A serious law-enforcement incident unfolded Monday in Oakley, California, after a Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy was shot at during a traffic stop on Gold Run Drive. Authorities say the deputy was responding to a call about a restraining-order violation when the suspect exited a vehicle and fired multiple shots at the deputy. The deputy was not struck and returned gunfire.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot into a nearby neighborhood, prompting an extensive manhunt and shelter-in-place advisory for local residents. Law enforcement agencies including the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Oakley Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and neighboring police departments assisted in the search. Residents in the area were urged to stay indoors, lock doors and windows, and report any suspicious activity as officers canvassed streets such as Lariat Lane, Placer Drive, Prospect Court, and others.

Oakley Fatal Shooting:
As the search continued into the afternoon, a significant law enforcement response — including SWAT and hostage negotiation teams, drones, and K-9 units — surrounded a home on the 2700 block of Placer Drive where the suspect was believed to be barricaded. After several hours of attempts to communicate, a gunshot was heard from inside the residence. The suspect appeared to attempt to take his own life and was subsequently wounded and taken into custody by medical personnel on site before being transported to a hospital.
The man has been identified as 54-year-old Raymond E. Smith of Oakley, who will face charges that include attempted murder of a peace officer.
The city’s shelter-in-place order was eventually lifted once authorities determined the immediate threat had passed. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have asked anyone with relevant information to contact the sheriff’s office.
